Studying the Individual Factors Affecting Pro-Social Rule Breaking in the Workplace

Abstract

Pro-social rule breaking and violation of rules and policies are organizational problems. However breaking the organizational rules is not always self-interested. Sometimes employees intentionally violate a formal organizational policy or regulation with the intention of promoting organizational interests or one of its stakeholders. As a result, organizational behavior scholars are interested to explain the motivators of such behaviors within the work place. In this article we are looking for the individual factors affecting pro-social rule breaking. The study has quantitative approach and the research model has been measured through a sample consists of 265 employees of 4th regional office of Tehran municipality and through simple random sampling. Data was gathered through valid questionnaires and analyzed by SPSS and Lisrel software through factor analysis and structural equation modeling methods. Results show that “risk-taking propensity” or the natural tendency to overestimate the likelihood of success, and “empathy” or the ability to understand and share the feelings of other people have positive relationship with pro-social rule breaking.
